Since forming in June of 2006, the Homeless Cat Committee members of PAWS have had many significant accomplishments. We have provided Trap Neuter and Return (TNR) classes for the public. We volunteer mornings at the Spay/Neuter check in, providing more opportunity to educate the public. Thanks to a few generous donors in 2007, we ran an ad in the Pennysaver offering free Spay/Neuter and through these fixed 400 cats for the public. This year we have a program (again funded by a few generous donors) targeting female cats that are known to have had kittens. This fund, which is being administered by SJACS, is targeted in hopes that we hit the source of the kitties, which is even better. We get frequent requests to help with TNR projects and have helped with over 350 cats/kittens at the request of SJACS staff, or general public requests. Many times there are only a small numbers of cats involved, but we also have helped on some large cases (over 40 cats in a location) where wellmeaning individuals let things get out of hand by feeding but not fixing the cats. We teach better practices on colony management, and often that includes better trapping techniques as we help them to catch the cats and get them fixed. In some projects, many PAWS members are needed to participate to TNR a large colony, and of course significant resources are needed for those cats/kittens who are adoptable, including foster home space. As is often the case in such large colony situations, many of the cats/ kittens have upper respiratory and eye infections – and other health issues – and the costs run up; the PAWS medical fund is available to help in such cases.
