Cranberry is a red & white Siberian Husky that was picked up by San Jose Animal Control after she was hit by a car. Her front leg was de-gloved (the skin was scraped off)! After the required hold time, Cranberry was offered to a rescue because of her leg injury.

Bay Area Siberian Husky Rescue (BASHR) went to pick her up and discovered that she was pregnant. Because she had been hit by a car, the health of the puppies were in question, so BASHR decided it was best to terminate the pregnancy and spay Cranberry.

Upon entering the abdomen, the surgical team found something surprising. It appeared that during the accident, the uterus had torn and one of the unborn puppies had been thrown out of the uterus. She would never had survived giving birth to the litter! The puppy appeared normal so the medical team decided to see if the puppies could be saved. An emergency Caesarean was performed and soon four healthy puppies’ wails filled the surgery ward.

The puppies were born the day before Thanksgiving. A wonderful lady from Boxer rescue had already offered to foster the mom over the holiday weekend and suddenly was asked if she would foster all 5…she agreed.

The first 12 to 24 hours is hard with a “new” mom that did not give birth naturally to her puppies…at first the mom isn’t sure the puppies are hers. But the foster parent was able to “introduce” Cranberry and her puppies.

After 8 weeks, Cranberry, now know as Noel, was adopted by a family that had adopted a dog from BASHR 12 years ago. Their dog had passed away and they wanted another Siberian from our group. They have given Cranberry a wonderful new home!

PAWS assisted BASHR with the unexpected cost of the C-section. BASHR and Cranberry greatly appreciates PAWS help.
