Early in June, 2007, the PAWS Hotline received a call for help with kittens born to a semi-feral cat. The call was from a woman who was on oxygen therapy 24 X 7 and was unable to help. The four 1-day old kittens, along with the mom, were being housed in a box in an outside garage.

When we responded to the call, we immediately noticed a strong, fetid smell coming from the box. The mom was very weak and did not have the strength to clean up the afterbirth or to groom the kittens. We rushed her to a veterinarian, and found that she had a severe infection and a very high temperature. The two weakest kittens did not live through the night. But two of the kittens – Jake and Moe – did survive, and they are the most incredible, friendly and loving kittens you will ever encounter!

After recovering from her infection, the mom (we named her Samantha) went on to be a wonderful mother. She nursed the kittens until they were 8 weeks old, and she patiently allowed their human foster mom to handle and play with the kittens at will. When the kittens were old enough to be weaned, Samantha was spayed and returned to her former home, where she continues to live a life of leisure and comfort.

As for the kittens, Jake and Moe are now looking for their forever homes. These two boys are the most fun! They hide from each other and then attack, they run and slide and bounce off the furniture, they have examined every nook and cranny in their foster home, and they are fearless. Nothing upsets them – not even big, barking dogs. And most importantly, these two kittens are so loving and affectionate. They follow you around the house, and if you sit down for one minute, they will be in your lap, purring up a storm. And they are so handsome! Jake has a soft, gray ticked coat, and Moe is a sleek gray tabby boy. If you know of anyone who is looking for years and years of love and entertainment, please have them contact us!

We are very grateful for the donation that PAWS made towards Samantha’s veterinary expenses. Without their intervention and generous support, Samantha, Jake and Moe would not have made it.
