The San Jose Animal Care and Services and the Humane Society Silicon Valley have received a $200,000 grant from PetSmart Charities.
The grant is being used to fund free Chihuahua Spay and Neuter. Residents who reside in designated zip codes 95111, 95112, 95116, 95122 and 95127 can get their Chihuahuas fixed at no charge.
Combined, the partner shelters plan to use the grant money to spay and neuter approximately 3020 dogs over a 2-year period. Both organizations hope this joint effort will result in a dramatic decline in the number of Chihuahuas they take in each year.
Eligible dogs must be Chihuahuas or Chihuahua mixes under 25 pounds and be between 4 months and 7 years old. They must also reside in the specified zip codes because recent statistics show that the majority of Chihuahuas impounded by the shelters came from those locations.

Lucky was rescued literally minutes from being put down on 12/8/11, as a 13th St Cats’ rescuer was begged to take him by a SJACC shelter worker who was about to put him to sleep. The shelter worker pointed out he was so friendly and seemed an easy “fix” with just an identified open wound on the bottom of his front left paw that SJACC was putting him down for. After a month of meds and cage rest, the paw was still not completely healed, and a further evaluation determined he also had a old fractured rear femur (near the hip joint) requiring Femoral Head Ostectomy surgery; during that surgery the front paw wound was biopsied, cleaned, and sutured. It was also noted during surgery that he had a large injection site reaction that they excised! Man, this guy is truly lucky to have been rescued. Being a charming, loving cat, 13th St has found a “foster to adopt” home so he is lucky yet again!
13th St Cats is very thankful to PAWS for SJACS for helping fund this feline’s medical issues, for the advice of the Dr. Rusher Rescue Clinic, and to Adobe Animal hospital for the discounted surgery.
Donations to the PAWS for SJACS medical fund helps make saving such animals possible, and PAWS for SJACS thanks all our donors.

Mae West was found as a stray wearing a skeleton Halloween costume. The costume seemed to be holding a piece of gauze onto an open and bleeding ulcerated mass on the back of her neck. SJACS vet prescribed antibiotics. Mae West was very shut down in the shelter, laying flat and not really interacting. Golden Gate Basset Rescue (GGBR) agreed to take her and immediately got her vetted and into a foster home. Within a day she was alert, happy, wagging tail. The veterinarian who examined the mass determined that it was floating freely and was able to remove it in its entirety. In addition she was given a complete dental.
PAWS for SJACS helped support the medical costs for Mae West and she is now happily awaiting a new forever home – You can find more information on http://ggbassetrescue.org
